A CHEERLEADING squad will swap pompoms and pyramids for extreme obstacles to raise vital funds for a North-East Down’s syndrome charity.
Ten members of the Durham Divas Varsity Cheerleading Squad, based at Durham University, will take on the Water Wipeout obstacle course in Nottingham on Saturday, June 21.
Their aim is to raise £800 for the Education Centre for Children with Down Syndrome (ECCDS) and, with more than £600 already pledged, they are well on the way to achieving their goal.
Cheerleader and medical student Hannah Marsden, 23, said: “We want to do something for charity now that we have finished all of our competitions.
“I am a volunteer at ECCDS and I know what great work it carries out. It is the only charity I have seen that does what it does.”
Last week, the squad visited the charity’s base in Newton Aycliffe and performed a routine for the children.
ECCDS founder Maggie Hart said: “We are delighted the girls are fundraising for us. The little children loved them.”
