A CARNIVAL king will be crowned at Bowes Carnival for the first time in its 90-year history.
Bowes Hutchinson School pupil Edward Turner, from year six, was voted into the position by his fellow pupils, as there are no girls in the boys-only year group to fill the traditional carnival queen role.
Edward will receive his crown at the carnival and lead a procession through the village, on Saturday, June 14,
His entourage comprises the retiring carnival queen Sarah Alderson, herald Kirsty McLachlan, king’s attendant Jacob Watson and crown bearer Oliver Sayer.
The theme for the carnival’s fancy dress is the seaside.
A family football event for adults and children aged nine and above kicks off the celebrations on Friday, June 13, on the school field.
Players should arrive at 5.45pm for 6pm kick-off.
Saturday’s carnival parade will be led by the Rhythm Train Samba band.
There will be stalls, bouncy castle, a circus and music from Barnard Castle band on the school field.
A disco and family games night takes place in the village hall, from 6.30pm to 9pm.
A family sports afternoon will be held on Sunday, June 15.
