WOMEN took to the streets on Friday in a 'reclaim the night march' to protest against violent acts towards women.

Organised by the Durham University Feminism Society, the women-only march left the Market Place, in Durham, for a vigil in support of women and girls around the world.

Campaigners walked along the riverbanks and through the city’s streets finishing with music and drinks at the Empty Shop HQ on Framwellgate Bridge.

It was described as an ‘opportunity to for Durham women and girls to come together and claim back the night and the streets from the actual experience of sexual violence and the constant threat of its possibility.’

Rachel Piper, President of the Durham University Feminist Society said: "The march is intended to raise awareness of sexual violence towards women.

"As the name suggests it’s about reclaiming the night, making women feel safer when they are out on the streets at night.

"I hope that the increased awareness the march brings helps the people who have become victims of sexual violence."

The march is part of a six-week long campaign organised by Durham Women Rising which will continue until March 30.
