THE Northern Lights were clearly seen across the region yesterday night (Thursday, February 28).

Some of the best views of the lights were along the region’s coast and some people reported being able to see them in the south of England.

Professional photographer, Ian Forsyth, took a stunning set of pictures of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, in his native Saltburn.

Explaining he’d never been able to take photographs of the lights before, he said: “I was watching the Twitter news feeds and there was talk of photographers getting good shots up in Scotland so I kept an eye out of my house, which looks out to the beach.

“When I saw them I went down the pier, it must have been about 10pm, and spent a good hour-and-a-half.

“They look more dramatic as photographs than they did to the naked eye because of the way the light enters the camera, but there was no trickery involved or anything like that. To the naked eye you could see the green lights moving but you couldn’t really see the red.”

The Aurora Borealis are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun clashing as they enter the earth’s atmosphere.
