A CHARITY in north Durham is being helped by solicitors from across the county in March.

Instead of charging clients for preparing wills, the lawyers from several firms will waive their fees in return for a donation to Willow Burn Hospice, near Lanchester.

The scheme, now in its fifth year, will help to provide free palliative care for patients with life-limiting illnesses, and support to families and carers.

Clare Chillingworth, grants and legacy fundraiser for Willow Burn Hospice, said: “Around two-thirds of people do not have wills, therefore decisions made after their death may not necessarily be what they expect or would have chosen.

“By writing a will individuals can be sure that their wishes will be carried out and their loved ones provided for.

“We are delighted that local solicitors have agreed to take part again in 2014 and are extremely pleased to welcome Giles Hunter Partnership from Chester-le-Street on board for the first time.

“By waiving their fees, these professionals and their clients are helping us to continue our work across Derwentside and beyond.”

Last year’s Make a Will Month proved very successful, raising over £2,000.

The scheme also offers the opportunity of leaving gifts in wills, known as legacies, to the hospice.

Helen Biglin, partner and head of the wills, trust and probate team at BHP Law, said: “Once a Will has been made it is important to remember that personal circumstances change and so does the law.

“For these reasons wills need to be kept under review. In normal circumstances we would advise that a will should be reviewed every three years.”
