POLICE covering England’s biggest county are looking for more volunteers to join their ranks.

The North Yorkshire force already has about 120 volunteers working in a number of roles – but wants to boost that number by another 100.

The volunteers work alongside police officers and staff.

The roles they fulfil include helping to ensure callers are dealt with politely and efficiently, carrying out checks on the vehicle fleet and making sure they are in the right location, helping with administration during major investigations and assisting at inquiry counters.

Other volunteers will work in the community offering crime and fire prevention advice.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy said “We have an excellent working relationship with the volunteers across North Yorkshire who already provide their valuable time to work alongside us.

“They are an integral part of the policing family, providing an enhanced policing service to communities and enable police officers and police staff to spend more time performing their core role.

“Volunteers bring with them a whole range of skills and experience which complement the work of their colleagues, while developing their own abilities.”

To find out more special events are being held at Northallerton town hall on April 4, between 2pm and 4pm; Harrogate police station on Beckwith Head Road on March 28 from 3pm to 7pm; and the National Centre for Early Music in Walmgate, York, on March 17 from 2pm to 6pm.
