THE DRAMATIC chords that open Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto are one of the most recognisable moments in classical music.
Acclaimed Turkish pianist Gulsin Onay visits Durham City to perform this popular piece with Orchestra North East in an afternoon concert at the Gala Theatre, at 3pm on Sunday, March 2.
The orchestra will be conducted by Thomas Blunt, who has held posts as chorus master of Glyndebourne Opera, and as assistant conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra - and has worked with many other leading orchestras around the world.
Peter Chester of Orchestra North East said “We enjoyed having Thomas Blunt to conduct us in 2012 so we are very much looking forward to his return in March.
“And as for Gulsin Onay, she is a most exciting pianist and many across the region will have heard her, so we feel privileged to have her perform with us.
“She has played the Tchaikovsky many times and it should be a stunning performance”
The other two works on the programme are by the Finnish composer Jan Sibelius - vividly evoking the northern beauty of his homeland.
Orchestra North East decided to put on the concert on a Sunday afternoon to make it more accessible to families and to those who prefer not to go out in the evenings, with a programme that promises to appeal to young and old alike.
Tickets are £14 (£7 for students) and free to children under 16.
