A COMMUNITY transport scheme has launched a new meals on wheels service – taking diners out for dinner.
Weardale Community Transport is running regular rides out to restaurant around the area for residents.
Scheme co-ordinator Gillian Herron said: “Meals on Wheels has long provided a valuable service to people who may find it difficult to prepare a meal every day. Our scheme builds on that by recognising that social links are just as important as food in keeping people healthy.
“Talking to our Diala Ride customers, some of whom already use our services to get to the Durham Dales Centre for lunch on a Wednesday, we realised that people all over the Dale would like the opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy some company.
“Local businesses are keen to take advantage of the opportunity to increase midweek lunchtime trade and are offering us some great deals for groups."
Customers pay £10 for the outing, including door to door transport, a short scenic tour and a two course meal.
Start up funding has been secured from Durham County Council and a Clinical Commissioning Group Transformation Grant.
