A BOOKWORM is behind bars today - after giving a false name at a library.

Lee Rogers had overdue titles and wanted to avoid being fined, his lawyer told a court yesterday (Thursday, February 20).

His fantasy fiction landed him in trouble because 20-year-old Rogers is a registered sex offender.

The pervert is monitored and he is obliged to tell police of any aliases he uses or if he moves house.

Teesside Crown Court heard he told library staff - as well as others he met - that he was Lee Robinson.

The lie flouted sex offender notification requirements and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).

Rogers, of Middlesbrough Road, South Bank, Middlesbrough, was jailed for a total of 14 months.

The court heard that he had also been in contact with a 15-year-old girl which breached his SOPO.

Over a two-day period, Rogers exchanged hundreds of text messages with the teenager on their phones.

Julian Gaskin, mitigating, said: "They had never met.

 "He has pleaded guilty to making contact with this individual . . . it was purely a friendship."

Judge Howard Crowson said: "That Sexual Offences Prevention Order was there to protect people like her.

"Some 15-year-olds are vulnerable to this type of approach and have insufficient knowledge, often, to see the risks of getting involved with someone who is older, flattering and who appears to be loving."

The court heard that Rogers was convicted in 2007 for sexual assault on an under-13, and three years later for possessing extreme pornography.

Since the SOPO was made in September 2011, Rogers has breached it three times and has also been caught with indecent images.

He pleaded guilty to charges of failing to comply with notification requirements and breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
