A CHARITY that supports families in crisis is preparing for a surge in interest after being featured in a documentary.

Safe Families for Children helps mostly Christian volunteers provide safe temporary homes for youngsters whose families have run into trouble.

Founded by motor magnate Sir Peter Vardy, it was featured on the BBC’s Inside Out programme earlier this week (Monday, February 17).

The charity currently works in Middlesbrough and Tyne and Wear, with nearly 500 volunteers connected to 50 churches. Last year, it supported about 135 families.

Chief executive Matt Wilson said: “We are prepared and ready to respond positively to anyone who gets in touch, whether that’s churches that want to partner with us or professionals who recognise that we can support the good work they’re already doing in our communities.

“To parents or other carers who are struggling to cope, the message is that our door is always open. They don’t have to suffer alone, we’re here to help.”
