A STOCKBROKER given a bursary which helped him secure a place at one of the region’s universities has awarded a scholarship to two of its students.

Peter Atherton, head of Utility Sector at Liberum Capital, has donated £10,000 to Teesside University.

First year students Naman Hussain and Connor Kerr have each been given £2,500 to support their studies and extracurricular activities over three years.

Another worthy duo starting this September will benefit from the same financial amount.

Mr Hussain, 19, from Hartlepool, is studying BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance while 18-year-old, Mr Kerr from Thornaby, has enrolled on a BA (Hons) Business Management course.

Mr Atherton graduated from Teesside in 1987, after receiving a Littlewoods Pools scholarship while studying for A-levels in his home city of Liverpool.

He has created the Peter Atherton Opportunities Awards to fund a voluntary placement for two deserving students in their first year, a work placement in the second and to help pay for study costs and equipment in the final year.

“I received a scholarship when I was younger and probably would not be where I am today without it,” he said.

“It is a great feeling to know that I am helping other young people who have the drive and determination to succeed.

“Naman and Connor are extremely bright, enthusiastic and ambitious students and I am pleased to be able to play a small part in their journey through higher education.”

Mr Hussain said he was delighted to be awarded the scholarship. “I can’t describe how it felt – I am just so grateful for the support,” he said.

“It has definitely given me extra motivation to do well here. Knowing there is somebody like Peter willing to support me is a fantastic feeling."
