A MAN who attempted to slash the tyres of a police car for a dare appeared before magistrates today (Wednesday, February 19).

Officers discovered Lee Stonehouse crouched behind a Vauxhall Astra police car on Central Avenue in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, during the early hours of Sunday, February 2.

Blair Martin, prosecuting, said the 29-year-old fled from the scene, leaving one kitchen knife behind and disposing of another along the way.

The police officers gave chase and Stonehouse, of Russell Court, Newton Aycliffe, was caught and arrested.

“He told the police he had been with others who dared him to cause damage to a police vehicle,” said Mr Martin.

“He then went to his partner’s address picked up a 14 inch and 17 inch kitchen knife.

“He admits he fully intended to slash the tyres while being filmed by his friends.

“He said, in interview, that his behaviour was shocking, having reflected on his conduct.”

Stonehouse pleaded guilty to attempting to damage a police car and two charges of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

Magistrates adjourned the case until Monday, March 17, for probation reports.

Stonehouse received unconditional bail.

No mitigation was given during the hearing.
