POLICE in a North Yorkshire market town have offered reassurances to the community following disorder in the market place.

Officers were called to Thirsk town centre on Sunday (February 16) evening, following reports that a group of men were causing a disturbance.

When they arrived in the Market Place, they discovered four men, who were known to each other, involved in a fight.

A 23-year-old man was knocked to the ground, but declined to make a complaint to police.

Two local men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested on suspicion of affray and released on bail pending further inquiries.

A 20-year-old man was given a warning and ordered to leave the area.

Chief Inspector Sarah Sanderson, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “I would like to reassure residents in Thirsk that we will not tolerate this type of violent behaviour in our communities and that we will respond quickly to such incidents.

“If you witnessed the disturbance taking place I strongly urge you to contact the police straight away as you may have vital information.”
