RADIO presenter Frank Wappat has died at the age of 84.
The BBC Radio Newcastle broadcaster, who worked for the corporation for 40 years, died earlier today (Monday, February 17) on his birthday.
He suffered heart failure and died at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Mr Wappat, from Hebburn, who retired in October 2010 due to ill health, was described as a ‘legend’ at the station by BBC Newcastle editor Andrew Robson.
Mr Robson said: “I didn't get the chance to work with him for too long but his name was synonymous with this radio station for decades.
“Frank retired due to ill health four years ago. Our thoughts are with his wife and family and friends at this difficult time.”
