TO celebrate national nest box week visitors to Saltholme were provided with all the materials they needed to make a home for feathered friends.

Bird lovers were offered the chance to either make a basic box, or for an additional fee of £2, make it security-tight to deter unwanted visitors.

The event was one of several being held at the RSPB nature reserve near Port Clarence, Stockton, over the coming months.

RSPB members can attend a star-gazing night on Saturday, March 1, from 5.30pm to 8pm to see the gas giant Jupiter and its four Galilean moons as they reach the highest point in the skies.

Astronomers will also be able to observe the moon, the spring constellations and other deep sky objects.

And from Saturday, April 5, to Sunday, April 20, Saltholme’s lambing shed will be the focus for its expectant flock of Shetland sheep. Visitors will be able to join in woolly crafts during the Easter holidays, greet the arrivals and may get the chance to name some of the newest residents.

Booking and a £10 fee is required for the stargazing event, and normal entry charges apply for Lambing Live. To book a place or for more details contact RSPB Saltholme call 01642-546625 or email saltholme@rspb.org.uk
