A PAIR of North Yorkshire bakers proved they were game for anything during the grand final of a TV competition.
Alex Franks and Di Dinsdale, from the Angels Share at The Station, Richmond, were tasked with creating an Iconic Bake for the ITV programme, Britain's Best Bakery.
Up against two other teams during the second of three stages of the finale, competition was fierce as all chose to make savoury pies.
After some deliberation, they opted for a North Yorkshire-reared venison pie with bilberry, nutmeg, orange, rosemary and locally brewed ale topped off with a hot water crust.
During the tasting at RHS Wisley in Surrey, the judges Peter Sidwell and Mich Turner gave a measured verdict.
"I thought it had a very well-rounded savoury flavour and I liked herbs and the pastry on the top," said Turner.
"But I could get a venison pie with local ale anywhere in the country," Sidwell countered.
In the end, the judges voted the offering from rivals, Maison Mayci as the best on the day.
Despite this, the Angels Share duo were pleased with their creation.
"We were really proud of it, we have done our best, we really have," said Mrs Franks.
The final programme begins at 4pm today. (FRI)
