North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are urging chip lovers to take care when they take part in National Chip Week between February 17 and 23. They are advising people to cook chips in the oven, or in a temperature controlled deep-fat fryer rather than a chip pan. Group Manager Peter Hudson said fires in a chip pan can happen easily if the oil overheats and ignites. He said: “Oven chips are a safer and healthier way to enjoy your favourite, but if you do choose to deep fat fry please don’t leave the pan unattended. If your pan does catch light, don’t throw water over it – get out, stay out and call 999.”
