A MAN originally from the North-East is in training for a 156-mile run through the Sahara Desert.
Pete Nichols, who is originally from Durham, will tackle the Marathon de Sables over six days starting on Monday, April 7.
The 28-year-old, who now lives in Wigan, Lancashire, will have to cope with temperatures of up to 55 degrees during the day and down to four degrees overnight.
The longest day’s run will be a gruelling 55 miles.
All participants have to carry with them everything they need to survive, including food, cooking utensils, sleeping equipment and medical supplies.
Mr Nichols, an environmental manager at J Murphy and Son in Golborne, said: “Until last year I had never done a marathon before but I heard about the Marathon de Sables through a friend and decided it was a challenge I really wanted to do.”
He hopes to raise £3,500 for Lancashire-based disabled children’s charity Unique Kidz and Co.
