A TEENAGER who crashed his father's BMW into a wall after driving at speeds of more than 100mph told police: “My dad is going to kill me.”

Liam Kirkbright told officers he clocked 140mph in the high powered vehicle, while Teesside Crown Court heard the BMW pulled away from a pursuing patrol car which itself was doing 100mph.

The 18-year-old failed to stop after zooming past a startled police officer in his dad's BMW on the A1085 Redcar to Dormanstown trunk road shortly after 2am on September 22 last year.

Prosecuting, Harry Hadfield said the defendant ran red lights during the pursuit and drove without any regard to safety.

When the vehicle reached Thrush Road, Redcar, its rear end began to snake and it hit a wall.

Mr Hadfield said Kirkbright, who injured his right arm in the crash and had cuts to his face, got out of the BMW along with two other passengers and immediately admitted being the driver.

After being arrested he said: “It is my dad's car. He is going to kill me.”

The defendant, of Pennine Way, Skelton, east Cleveland, admitted dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance and a full licence.

John Nixon, mitigating, said Kirkbright's father – who was in court – did not speak to him for two months afterwards.

He said: “He seems to be a good person by and large, but this was a night of utter stupidity and he has had a long time now to reflect on his actions.”

Judge Howard Crowson said he would have jailed Kirkbright for ten months had the matter gone to trial, but said there were mitigating factors including his young age.

He was given a 12 month community sentence and 150 hours unpaid work and will have to undertake an extended driving test.
