A MEMORIAL walk has raised more than £10,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance in memory of a teenager killed in a car accident three years ago.

Jonathan and Vicky Clayton, landlord and landlady of the Willow Tree, Leeming Bar, near Bedale, netted £10,052 for the air ambulance charity by organising a 30 mile walk through Wensleydale, over Great Shunner Fell – the third highest peak in the Yorkshire Dales – and into Swaledale near Keld.

Mrs Clayton said around 30 people took part in the walk and she thanked the community for its continued support in her fundraising events in memory of her son Sam who was 17 when he was killed in a car crash near Thorpe Perrow in 2011.

She said: “The GNAA paramedics were amazing and because of them we had another week with him.

“Since then we have raised nearly £20,000 for GNAA through various events as a way of giving something back – something good had to come of his death.”

The charity walk – called the Old Shunner Shuffle – took place last July but Mr and Mrs Clayton presented the cheque to GNAA at the pub on Friday, as part of a fundraising evening with raffle, quiz, and a play your cards right game.

She said: “The whole community has really supported us. We even organised a mini Shuffle – a three-mile walk around the village for children and people less able to do the main walk – which raised £600.”
