TWO cricketers will be launched from the roof of the Stadium of Light in Sunderland to raise funds for charity.

Durham cricketers Gordon Muchall and Gareth Breese will reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour when they take on a 900ft Zip Wire challenge on Saturday, April 5.

The North East Autism Society (NEAS) is hosting the challenge in partnership with Sunderland Football Club’s charity, the Foundation of Light, and it will raise more than £25,000 for both charities.

This year, Mr Muchall and Mr Breese were awarded a benefit season and are raising funds for the Professional Cricketers' Association Benevolent Fund, Macmillan Cancer Support and NEAS.

The latter is a cause close to Mr Muchall’s heart, as his son was diagnosed with autism last November.

And, after visiting the North East Autism Centre in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, he was keen to get involved.

“I know first-hand some of the challenges parents face when dealing with a youngster on the autism spectrum and know how important and vital the work of the charity is,” said the 31-year-old, who is an NEAS ambassador.

“The Zip Wear challenge will be terrifying but a fantastic way to raise awareness and to mark World Autism Awareness month”.

Registration for the Zip Wire challenge is £20 and participants must pledge to raise at least £100 in sponsorship.

Early registration is advised as places are filling up fast.
