A SPECIALIST team at Newcastle College has been shortlisted in a national awards ceremony in recognition of its outstanding work supporting over 200 students with autism.
Newcastle College Autism Support Team has been nominated in the ‘Inspirational Education Provision’ category in The National Autistic Society's (NAS) Autism Professionals Awards 2014.
The annual ceremony, which first took place in 2013, recognises and rewards services and professionals that lead the way in innovative autism practice and make a real difference to the lives of people with the condition in the UK.
Newcastle College Autism Support Team was nominated by Ros Marshall, Senior Disability Advisor for learners with Autism and Asperger Syndrome at Newcastle College.
Ros said: “The team is invaluable to the college and has helped over 200 students since it was formed in 2008.
“Many of the students at the college have complex support needs, which the team go above and beyond to meet, providing information, support, and guidance wherever it is needed. It’s testament to the team’s success that the number of people they support has significantly increased in the five years since it started.
"The team also offers autism awareness training to staff across the college so we can all provide higher quality support to our students. Their dedication and success is inspiring and they would be worthy winners of the award."
The winner will be revealed at an awards dinner held on the first night of the NAS’ Professional Conference on 4 March 2014 at The Royal Hall, Harrogate.
