LEGENDARY naturalist and broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough, is giving a talk in Middlesbrough about a historic artifact collected by local explorer Captain Cook.

Sir David will recount the fascinating story of a wooden carving from Easter Island collected by Cook’s crew on the very same day 240 years ago in 1774.

The illustrated lecture on Saturday, March 15, at Middlesbrough Theatre is presented by The Captain Cook Birthplace Trust/Museum in partnership with the Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers.

Sir David began an investigation to trace the origins of the artefact – a journey of discovery that spanned the globe and led him on voyages to Russia, Australia, England, the Pacific, a Tahiti beach and finally to one of the most remote places on earth.

Sir David, who is President of the Captain Cook Birthplace Trust, will be bringing along the actual carving for the audience to see close-up.

The event marks the start of their new season of illustrated talks commemorating the anniversary of Captain Cook’s second voyage (1772-75) and the launch of the Dresser Gallery at the town's Dorman Museum.

The programme has been jointly organised by Royal Geographical Society/IBG regional coordinator Tony MacDonald, and Phil Philo, Senior Curator at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum.

Mr Philo said: “We are delighted that Sir David agreed to present this fascinating talk to launch our new season.

“We know that people will be thrilled to have the opportunity to hear him speak in person and hope that the audience will be inspired to look out for and attend future lectures.”

Forthcoming lectures will cover Cook’s visits to Easter Island, May 22, New Zealand, June 19, Vancouver Island, Canada, July 17, and Dr Christopher Dresser’s pioneering visit to Japan, September 20.

Sir David, whose careers in natural history spans more than 60 years, was recently named Britain's most trustworthy figure in a public poll. His celebrated series include The Secret Life of Plants, Life on Earth and Frozen Planet.
