Disabled boy showered with glass as burglars threw brick through window.
A MOTHER has spoken of her anguish after her disabled son was showered with glass when burglars hurled a brick through his bedroom window.
The teenager, who has cerebral palsy and Down's syndrome, was left severely shaken by the breakin.
"This was my worst nightmare,"
said Angela Rimmer, 17- year-old Christopher's mother.
"I can't believe somebody could do this.
"He was really shocked but, thank God, he wasn't hurt."
The burglars fled when they were disturbed by Angela's partner, Stuart Barras, at their home in Westmoreland Street, Darlington.
Mr Barras ran to Christopher's room after hearing a loud crash at 10pm on Thursday.
"I was sat on the settee when I heard the glass smash," he said.
"I walked through to Christopher's room and a young girl with blond hair was trying to get in through the window.
"Somebody on the outside was lifting her up so she could get in. I switched the light on and she shouted run'.
"I chased them out into the street but I didn't run after them because I had to get back to Christopher.
"It's sick that they could do something like this."
Christopher is unable to walk after becoming paralysed by a severe case of cerebral palsy.
He lives in an adapted bedroom on the ground floor because his family could no longer carry him up and down the stairs every day.
Christopher is on an NHS waiting list to have a metal rod inserted in his spine.
The attack happened only days before Christopher's birthday.
Mrs Rimmer said: "Christopher sleeps with his head towards the window, so the brick could easily have hit him.
"Since we moved him into that room, I have always had this nightmare that something like this could happen.
"He was covered in glass.
There's glass all over the room and his bed is covered in tiny pieces.
"It's taken me ages to get it all cleared out.
"We've had the window boarded up to make it secure, but it won't be fixed properly until January 2, when everything opens again.
"It couldn't have happened at a worse time of year."
Inspector Alan Watson, of Darlington Police, said: "If anybody has any information that they think could help trace the people responsible, I would urge them to ring us immediately."
Darlington Police can be contacted on 0845-606-0365.
Witnesses can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
