A NEW housing complex is taking in residents.

Bill and Rita Snee became the first to move into Callendar Court, a complex for older people at Brecon Lough, in Gateshead.

It is the last of five housing schemes built since 2001 by Gateshead Council and housing association Housing 21 under the £15m Promoting Independence improvement scheme.

The centres are designed for older people with extra personal care needs, allowing them to live as independently as possible in adapted flats, with trained staff for support.

Each apartment in Callendar Court is equipped with an en-suite bathroom and adapted kitchen, using the latest technology that can employ discreet sensors to detect if tenants fall out of bed and automatically switches on lights or turns off taps if they become disoriented.

The complex has a restaurant, hairdressing salon, garden and hobbies room.

Mr Snee, a former bus driver, said: "We're settling in really well and it's close enough to see all our old neighbours and friends."
