FOR those who wondered about a big hole being excavated near Durham City's riverbanks, all has now become clear - thanks to a giant information board - the first of a series of such boards.

The excavation represents the start of work on the city's swimming pool and leisure complex.

Passers-by will now be able to see what the finished building will look like, as the board includes a detailed artist's impression of the completed building.

Leader of the city council, Councillor Fraser Reynolds, was on hand to watch the first of many picture boards being erected. He said: "It is great to have these boards showing what this exciting project will look like once completed.

"The city will be very proud of the facility when it opens and the pictures give a good indication as to what will be here for all of our residents to use.''

The boards will remain in place until the opening of the leisure centre in 2008.
