A LEADING councillor has called for tougher measures to stamp out drug dealers in Teesside.
Independent councillor Ken Walker, who represents the Gresham area on Middlesbrough Council, wants to see long statutory jail sentences in a bid to deter the dealers.
He said: "The sale of all class A drugs has soared throughout Teesside, with police seizures of drugs increasing by over 500 per cent since the year 2000.
"Cleveland Police have substantially stepped up their war on drug dealers, with operation Sabre in the vanguard shutting down many drug dens in Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool.
"This coming year must be the year we turn the tide on the low life that are selling drugs that destroy the lives of so many of our younger generation.
"There must be no quarter given by the police and the courts to the evil people that are involved in drug dealing.
"Long statutory jail sentences is the only punishment they understand and fear. We should no longer see parole being giving to those who are poisoning our young people's future."
Coun Walker also called for more police officers and support officers on the streets.
He said: "What is now essential is that we see high- profile policing throughout Teesside, seven days a week, with a remit to clear out the inhuman scum that are causing so much pain and suffering to decent innocent residents.
"When this is achieved, we really can expect a peaceful and prosperous future for us all here on Teesside."
