A CHARITY that helps homeless people is appealing for donations of hats, scarves, gloves and socks this winter.
First Stop, which gives advice and support to people who find themselves homeless or with housing problems, has asked for people to donate warm winter accessories.
The charity, which is open on all bank holidays throughout the festive period, also urged anyone who has housing difficulties to call in and see staff.
The charity has helped about 1,300 people this year.
As well as offering information, advice and guidance to help people get accommodation, the charity also helps people to get help for underlying issues, such as substance misuse treatment and debt counselling.
Project co-ordinator Tracy Freeman said: "When people come through the door, they are of equal worth to us, and we are happy to work with people to resolve any housing issues.
"Come to us and we will do everything we can to assist people to access accommodation. We do not want anyone sleeping rough at this time of year."
The charity operates a drop-in service at its premises in Tubwell Row, Darlington, and is open from 10.30am to 5pm on Mondays, 10am to 5pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 10am to 1.30pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
It will also be open on New Year's Day.
