This week's South American wine has an almost violet colour. The nose is very fruity with aromas of blackberries and plums.
On the palate the fruit is integrated with vanilla and chocolate notes. It's 14% alcohol but still soft and rounded with a velvety ripe finish. This is a good fruit concentrated wine, which should go well with casseroles and stews.
The wine is made by the Casas del Bosque company in the Aconcagua region of Northern Chile which lies between Pisco country and Santiago.
This is the hottest driest region in Chile where nevertheless some good red wines are made. The Casablanca Valley is the new vine growing area -the coolest part on the coast, near Valparaiso.
Here they experience the cooling fogs from the Humboldt current, ripening is slowed and the wines benefit in quality. Vines have been planted here since 1991 and the number have increased every year.
The merlot grape variety (the most planted in Bordeaux) does well here. This bottle came from Morrisons priced at £5.99.
