EVERY year many dogs find themselves out on the streets or dumped in rescue centres through no fault of their own.

And this Christmas is turning out to be a very busy year for Northern English Springer Spaniel Rescue (NESSR).

The organisation which offers a safe refuge while a permanent home can be found, aims to never turn away any springer spaniels.

The organisation does not have kennels or a rescue centre, with volunteer foster carers looking after dogs in their own homes.

Founder Cynthia Turner, who keeps up to 30 dogs at her farm near Morpeth, Northumberland, said: "The dark nights and cold wet weather makes it harder to exercise a dog.

"For breeds such as springer spaniels, that need at least two hours of exercise a day, this can be a difficult time for the owner and dog.

"Sadly, many of last year's Christmas puppies have long outstayed their welcome."

She added: "We need people willing to adopt a dog, or offer a temporary foster home, otherwise we may have to shut our doors to new dogs."

In the past week alone, NESSR has had several dogs come into its care.

Ms Turner said: "Springer spaniels have boundless energy, so they need owners who are willing to give them the attention, exercise and mental stimulation they need.

"In return, owners are rewarded with an affectionate, loyal and loving dog."

The organisation is urgently looking for families to adopt springer spaniels, cockers and cavaliers. Members also need foster carers to offer temporary homes over the Christmas period and throughout the year. And it is inviting donations for its work.

Ms Turner said: "All new homes are home checked and will require a vet and personal reference.

"We ask for a donation and new owners will need to sign an adoption agreement."
