COUNTY councillors plan to use technology to reduce the need to travel to meetings.

Members of all parties have backed a Liberal Democrat motion calling for increased use of web conferencing and telephone conferencing technology for council seminars and briefings.

The idea was proposed by Harrogate Starbeck member Margaret-Ann de Courcey-Bayley.

She said: "Taxpayers' money can be saved if the council invests now in the technology that will enable councillors and staff to communicate without necessarily being in the same room.

"Why have councillors traveling from Scarborough or Skipton to Northallerton for briefings when it could be done via a web conference?

"I am very pleased to see the cross-party support for these very sensible measures."
