CROOKS are being warned to stay out of Middlesbrough over the Christmas and New Year period as police patrols are stepped up.
Up to eight extra officers and the mounted and dog sections will be patrolling the town's shopping centres and malls.
It is hoped their presence will deter pickpockets, beggars, shoplifters and anyone tempted to indulge in anti-social behaviour in the coming weeks.
Sergeant Mark Hall, of the neighbourhood policing team, said: "Our message is clear - if you're coming to Middlesbrough to shop and socialise, we are here to ensure you have a safe and pleasant visit.
"If you're thinking of coming here to cause trouble or commit crime, please don't bother - we are looking out for you and we will take the strongest possible action."
