QUESTION

Our male cocker spaniel dog suffers from itchy skin, he has James Wellbeloved dried food he has been to vet who say this is the best food to be on. However the itchy skin still flares up, what other food can we try. Wet food is his favorite rather than dried. Many thanks.

ANSWER

Dear Julia,
Where can I begin? Well, certainally skin problems can be caused by poor diets, and also can be exaccerbated by poor diets, but I would really need to know if this case is 100% diet induced. If it were, then you would need to trial other foods for 6-12 weeks ar a time to decide if they were ok or not. Food exclusion testing is very time consuming. first you need two weeks on pulses and boiled lamb, then a six-week trial on the food of choice. If no better, then stop, back on the detox diet, and away again! We tend to be a bit lazier, these days! There is a Hills prescription diet-Z/D ULTRA, which we use as a detox diet, and often we use scecially formulated low allergy diets, such as hills, eukanuba, or jas welbeloved. If you want a tinned food, I often try dogs on chappie-low allergy/fish/rice, complete diet. other than that, then you try what you want. This just touches on food as an allergy problem!
