BOXES of sweets are being rushed to the world's war zones to bring some Christmas cheer to British soldiers.

About 8,000 packets of Haribo sweets have been delivered to Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, ready to be flown out to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 32 boxes were donated to the Army by the West Yorkshire sweet maker.

Peter Coulton, of Haribo, said the decision was taken after four soldiers wrote to the company asking for samples because their own supplies had run out.

"We had these boxes left over and we thought it was a great idea for the soldiers to have them," he said.

"It is brilliant to be able to send these boxes to the men and women doing such a wonderful job in Afghanistan and Iraq. I have a relative out there and they certainly eat a lot of Haribo.

"They are the best boys to get them. They certainly deserve them."

The sweets are being flown out by the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency (DSDA), based at Catterick.

Jimmy Snodgrass, DSDA manager, said they would arrive before Christmas Day.
