LIBRARY staff are turning back the clock to provide bookworms with a novel run-up to Christmas.

Librarians across Middlesbrough are dressing in Victorian costume, decking out reading rooms with 19th Century-style Christmas decorations and making hot buttered toast round a fireside.

Yesterday was the turn of Berwick Hills library. Hemlington library is given the Dickensian treatment today.

That includes staff dressed as Victorian maids serving hot chocolate and toast and the lady of the house, in full Victorian costume, reading a story at the fireside.

The free, family events offer children the chance to make Victorian-style Christmas cards and decorations to take home.
