A fairly complex medium-bodied wine this week with a not very intense nose of black cherries and raisins.
The palate boasts of strong earthy flavours. The tannins are quite drying but are smoothed by ripe fruit characters resulting in excellent length and texture. This is just the wine to go with moussaka or lasagne.
The grapes come from De Bortoli's King Valley vineyards in the state of Victoria, home to many Australians of Italian descent.
The must was cold -soaked for four days before a six-day fermentation on the skins. Ten per cent of the wine was matured in two year old oak barrels for three months before blending.
This bottle came from Oddbins priced at £7.29, this comes down to £5.83 if you include it in a case of 6.
Two others to include in the 20% off six are: Mas Arnaud Syrah Grenache - full of fresh summer fruits and light tannins for £ 4.99 and a Deakin estate shiraz at £5.69 which is full of the taste of plums and spices.
This one got a silver medal at the wine challenge.
