TWO adjacent comprehensive schools have been earmarked for merger in a multi-million pound plan.

Proposals to amalgamate Hall Garth and King's Manor schools, to create a single modern school in Acklam, Middlesbrough, will be discussed at a meeting of the local community council meeting, tomorrow.

Councillor Paul Thompson, Middlesbrough Council executive member for education and skills, said: "Doing nothing is not an option. Because of falling school rolls, in five years' time, one desk in three will be empty at these two schools - that just isn't sustainable.''

The council has secured £90m under the Government's Building Schools for the Future programme, and £20m has been earmarked for a building to replace the two Hall Drive comprehensives in 2011.

The council is consulting on various options for the schools, including closing either of the two schools or closing both and opening a replacement.

Leaflets detailing the proposals and inviting feedback have gone to parents.

Coun Thompson said: "We want to share with residents our proposals to provide the very best facilities for the children and staff who go to these Acklam-based schools.

"We believe a new start is the fairest option for both schools, which already share an admission zone and numerous facilities. It will also help us maximise investment in new buildings and facilities and create a thriving new school at the heart of the community.''

He added: "We want the views of the schools' community and local residents on these proposals.

"As well as the question of the new school, we will also be seeking views on how it should be run.''

Under Government legislation, the local education authority may have to competitively tender against rival bids from other organisations to run any new school which is built.

Coun Thompson said: "It is possible that we will have to run a competition in which other education providers will be free to bid to run the school, something new in Middlesbrough.

"The council will certainly be making its own bid, as we believe that we have a proven track record in providing the support and resources that modern community schools need to be successful.''
