A MAN whose body was found in a stream is believed to have been assaulted and his home burgled before his death.

Detectives believe that Darryl Craig's flat in Scarborough was burgled and that the 44-year-old was assaulted days before he was found dead in the town's Peasholm Glen, at 8.30am last Thursday.

A mobile police station has been set up outside the property in Endcliff Crescent.

A 32-year-old man arrested on Sunday in connection with what police describe as a murder-style investigation continues to be questioned. A 32-year-old local woman arrested at the weekend remains on police bail pending further inquiries.

Detective Superintendent Andy McMillan said yesterday: "We have reason to believe that Mr Craig's flat has been subject to a burglary and some of Mr Craig's personal property has been stolen."

He appealed for anyone living in the area who may have information about the burglary to contact police.

"Mr Craig's body showed signs of injury, noticeably severe bruising to his face and arms," said Det Supt McMillan. "It is now believed that some time in the days preceding his death, Mr Craig had suffered a serious assault.

"It is too early at this stage to say if that assault had any direct bearing on his death."

Police want to speak to anyone who saw Mr Craig, who was also known as Paul Darryl Duffy, in the hours before his death. Anyone who can help is asked to call 01609-768111.

Det Supt McMillan said Mr Craig walked with a distinctive gait, which made him look as if he was tip-toeing, and often wore a woolly hat or baseball cap.

Forty officers have been assigned to the investigation and search teams, including officers from Northumbria Police marine unit, have searched Peasholm Glen, where Mr Craig's body was found face down in a stream by a woman walking her dog.
