THE author of a newly-reprinted book will be giving two free talks tomorrow about the history of Darlington.

The book, Memories of Darlington 3, is by Chris Lloyd, deputy editor of The Northern Echo, and is compiled from his Wednesday local history columns.

It has been out of print for five years.

The illustrated talk - entitled Four Scandals and a Gooseberry - is taken from the Northgate chapters in the book, and will include what is probably the greatest financial scandal in the North-East.

Above what is now Greggs, in Northgate, Darlington, two auditors found a building society secretary slumped in a lavatory, blood pouring from his mouth, having tried to shoot himself.

The bullet had passed through his tongue, but he miraculously survived - so they arrested him, there and then on the toilet seat, and charged him with "felonious and fraudulent embezzlement".

Four Scandals and a Gooseberry starts at 2pm in Crown Street library, Darlington, and at 6.30pm in Cockerton library. All are welcome.

Memories of Darlington 3 is available for £6 from The Northern Echo's offices in Priestgate, from Waterstone's in the Cornmill Centre and at the talks.
