AN annual award was launched yesterday to encourage protection of the natural and built environment.
Community groups and professionals attended the launch of the 18th County Durham Environment Award, organised by Durham County Council, at the Rivergreen Centre, Aykley Heads.
The venue has been entered for a national Civic Trust Award and praised for its sustainable principles.
Councillor Bob Pendlebury, the council's cabinet member for sustainability, said: "The award encourages good design and sustainable principles in all aspects of the built and natural environment."
The awards have seven categories - built environment, craftsmanship, natural environment and countryside improvement, management and restoration of minerals and waste disposal, school, Local Action 21, and energy efficiency.
Application packs to enter are available from Durham County Council at www.durham.gov.uk or on 0191-383-3347.
