A NEWLY-APPOINTED fuel poverty officer is looking for community groups to help him spread the message about energy efficiency this winter.
Jason Martin, a former teacher, has been appointed by Easington District Council to help residents reduce their fuel bills - and stay warm at the same time.
He is offering to visit community groups and organisations around the district to talk about the grants and funding schemes available to help people heat their home by being more energy efficient.
He said: "Many people struggle to keep their homes warm at this time of year due to the price of fuel and the added costs of Christmas. But if your home is colder than is comfortable, you can suffer a wide range of health problems, from rheumatism and arthritis to breathing difficulties.
"However, there are solutions to fuel poverty.
"You can switch to a cheaper fuel provider, or install loft and cavity wall insulation.
"You should also check you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to, as these will help you cover the cost of heating bills."
Mr Martin, who has also worked for environmental charity Groundwork East Durham, added: "Fuel poverty should really be a problem of the past. There is help and support available, so let's get it eliminated."
Anyone interested in more information can contact Mr Martin on 0191-527-0501 ext 4454.
