A GREEN award was launched yesterday to encourage the protection of the natural and built environment.
Community groups and professionals attended the launch of the 18th County Durham Environment Award, organised by Durham County Council.
Parish councils, environmental bodies and local interest groups attended the event at the Rivergreen Centre, Aykley Heads, Durham City. The venue has been entered for a national Civic Trust Award and praised for its sustainable principles.
The award scheme has seven categories - built environment, craftsmanship, natural environment and countryside improvement, management and restoration of minerals and waste disposal, schools, Local Action 21, and energy efficiency - which are sponsored by NEDL, English Heritage, Carbon Trust, Premier, Cumbrian Industrials Limited, Service direct and Northumbrian Water.
