A NURSERY has earned a national award for excellence.
Bournmoor Nursery, which is near Chester-le-Street, was presented with the Pre-school Learning Alliance's national accreditation certificate.
The pre-school in Lambourne Crescent, gained the stamp of approval through the organisation's rigorous accreditation scheme.
The scheme is the first of its kind to recognise the importance of linking early years learning with high-quality care and the significance of involving parents.
North Durham MP Kevan Jones was present to lead the celebrations with staff, parents and children.
Chairwoman of the nursery Sheila Williams said: "Bournmoor Nursery is absolutely delighted that in accrediting the group, the Pre-school Learning Alliance recognises the very high standard of education and care we offer".
The nursery was established in 1977 and has 15 children on its register.
Pre-schools are often the first environment a child regularly attends away from home, and are viewed as a crucial part of early development.
Steve Alexander, chief executive of the alliance, said: "Today, more parents are looking for quality assurance in the settings for their children.
"Those parents need to know that providers establish a safe, secure and stimulating environment for the children, one that includes good-quality educational opportunities, appropriate to the children's age and stage of development.
"They also need to know the children are with well-skilled and trained adults who are, above all, committed to the education and care of those young children."
