TWO elderly residents of a Darlington village were the guests of honour at the unveiling of its first Christmas tree.
Dozens of people braved the cold last night to witness the switching on of Middleton St George's Christmas tree lights.
The village's two oldest residents, Winnie Hoare, 96, and Edith French, 100, were given the honour of turning the lights on.
Ward councillor and parish council chairwoman Doris Jones said: "We've never had a Christmas tree here before and we felt that it was time we did. We're delighted that it's now here and it's looking wonderful."
Cockerton Brass band entertained the crowds, who were served with mince pies and mulled wine.
Both Mrs French and Mrs Hoare said they were delighted to be invited.
