THE Forum has a winner in this bouncy, colourful production with an experienced, professional cast and a funny, topical script which appeals to adults and children alike.
Darren Day managed to use his doubtful romantic past to his advantage by making occasional jokes against himself, and made an appealing hero alongside his current real-life partner, Stephanie Dooley. Stephanie sings well and looks lovely, although, as always, I thought there were too many soppy songs, but at least they kept them short!
Impressions are a big part of Day's act and were easily recognisable; the kids in the audience were delighted with his Ali G, and everybody loves Frank Spencer.
Duggie Brown's Dame wore suitably garish costumes but wasn't too strident, he carried off his songs with panache and the kids he brought onto the stage trusted and responded to him.
The Broker's Men (or the King's Guards in this case) played by the Harper brothers, and Glenn M Ford's Nutty Norman added to the fun and the excellent Matthew Turnbull as baddie Fleshcreep enjoyed his role hugely, as did the audience.
The well-chosen songs were mostly middle-of-the-road foot-tappers you could sing along to.
Youngsters from the Forum Theatre School made up the chorus and very professional they were, too - I couldn't see anybody visibly counting their steps!
The finale was as sparkly as any panto fan could wish, and the whole performance was a warm, feel-good experience.
