THE way stray dogs are dealt with in Hartlepool is about to change following the appointment of a new company to run the Borough Council’s dog warden service.

From October 14, dogs that cannot be immediately re-united with their owners will be taken to Stray Aid Rescue Centre at Coxhoe.

This follows a decision to retire by the owner of the company that previously provided the service - Low Fallowfield Farm Kennels at South Hetton.

Kate Ainger, the council’s environmental projects officer, said: “After ten years of hard work and having successfully re-united or re-homed hundreds of stray dogs Joan Hunter is retiring.

“We would like to pass on our best wishes for her retirement, and we look forward to enjoying a similarly successful and positive working relationship with Stray Aid.”

The procedure for reporting a lost or found dog is not changing and people should continue to contact the Borough Council on 01429-523333.

To reclaim a dog, owners will need to pay the required fee at Hartlepool Civic Centre and then take a receipt to the kennels.
