WORN road markings which have led to chaos in parts of Bedale market place are to be tackled by the county council.
The move follows complaints that one end of an access road for delivery drivers, on the western side of the street, is being blocked by vehicles because 'keep clear' markings on the cobbles have almost disappeared.
One motorist who found the way blocked by an illegally parked van had to reverse out of the access road.
Motorists said they feared that obstructions could lead to a road rage incident.
White lines denoting disc parking bays on both sides of the street have also become so worn that some cars are straddling them, further reducing the market place's parking space.
The county council has now confirmed that there is a provisional programme to replace the parking bay markings, but work is unlikely to start until the spring because it depends on good weather.
Arrangements will be made to refresh the 'keep clear' markings earlier than that to prevent unnecessary obstructions.
Responding to suggestions for additional parking spaces in South End, a council spokesman said it was not likely to be as great a priority as other contenders on a reserve list of schemes awaiting funding.
