THERE was a double celebration in a County Durham community at the weekend when a new sports facility was opened on the same day as the biggest town show to date.

Victoria Jubilee Park, in Spennymoor, was a hive of activity on Saturday as people of all ages enjoyed the many activities on offer as part of the annual town show and family fun day.

Punch and Judy, birds of prey flying displays, craft and refreshment stalls, fairground rides and a horticulture tent, featuring more than 300 exhibits, were just some of the free attractions.

Spennymoor Town Band performed and there were various activities raising money for the stroke rehabilitation unit at Bishop Auckland Hospital.

However, the opening of the new multi-use games area in the park was arguably the biggest event of the day.

The all-weather pitch cost £80,000 and was funded by Sport England’s Inspired Facilities scheme, which contributed £50,000, and Spennymoor Town Council, which put forward the remainder.

Councillor Jeff Daley, the Mayor of Spennymoor, unveiled a plaque to mark its completion, before officially opening it to the public.

This was followed by a children’s football tournament, in which eight teams of youngsters battled it out for small cash prizes.

Coun Daley said: “Events like the town show and facilities such as the football pitch are wonderful because they bring the community together.

“Victoria Jubilee Park is a jewel in the crown for Spennymoor and it was brilliant to see so many people enjoying all the free activities.”

An annual horticultural show was traditionally held at Spennymoor Town Hall but, when this stopped in the 1970s, there were few opportunities for local gardeners to display their produce.

In 2011, Spennymoor Town Council resurrected the show in the park and it has grown in size and popularity.

Spennymoor mother-of-two Rachel Hughes, who brought her three-year-old daughter Ruby and three-week-old son Jake to the show, said: “There is definitely a lot more to do in Spennymoor now and this event is great because it is free. My little girl is having a lovely time.”
