POLICE investigating an incident in which a woman riding a trike died are appealing for another motorist to come forward.

Gwenda Ward, of Billy Row, Crook, suffered fatal injuries when her Rover Diablo trike motor vehicle hit a wall and overturned on the A689 road on the Newton Cap Viaduct, Bishop Auckland.

The 59-year-old was travelling north towards Toronto shortly after 1pm on Monday, June 3, when the incident occurred.

Police believe as she reached the bridge her vehicle veered across the road to its offside, hit a kerb then the bridge parapet.

The trike overturned before rolling back onto the main carriageway, coming to rest in the north bound lane.

PC Nigel Craig, of Durham Police’s collision investigation unit, said: “We believe there was a car travelling towards Toronto ahead of Mrs Ward on the trike.

“It is possible the driver of that vehicle may have seen something which might help us establish why the collision occurred.

“I would urge that person to get in touch with us.”

Her family paid tribute to her this week saying she was an enthusiastic motorcyclist who lived life to the full.

The motorist or any other witnesses are asked to call the collision investigation unit on 0191-3752159.
