CATERING students at a North-East college are taking part in a competition to design a cake for one of the region's oldest charities.
Three finalists from the Darlington College Competition will be picked to produce designs for Darlington Town Mission, which is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year.
The finalists' designs will be displayed at the Sainsbury’s store, in Victoria Road, Darlington, on Friday (June 7), and customers will taste and vote for their favourite.
The winning cake will be reproduced at the charity’s anniversary meal, in September, at Darlington College.
Marie Steward, administrative assistant at Sainsbury’s, said: “There’s a real community feel to this.
"Not only are we supporting a local charity, but you’ve also got the college students who are contributing to their portfolio and seeing the importance of Town Mission while doing that.”
The Town Mission is Sainsbury’s local charity of the year for 2012/13.
The charity, set up in 1838, aims to help the town’s most vulnerable people by alleviating loneliness and poverty.
